    • Garthman03 5:05 am on January 19, 2011 Permalink

Point or order.. good idea to feather edge the sand scratches around the outside before applying filler, just in case you go a little too far a fluck up your filler work..

    • lucasmorter 6:55 am on January 19, 2011 Permalink

@ladedk yeah but just so everyone knows a paper dust mask like that does not protect you against the paint fumes while painting you need to wear a respirator with an organic vapor filter and the masks these guys are wearing only keep dust out

      LOFAO
I need to sell my sata and get me one of those handles for a spray can to paint with

    • llaracuente 8:35 am on January 19, 2011 Permalink

as faR as primer , use a primer filler then use black primer very lightly as a guide coat to find hard to see scratches, sand that with 500or 600g 500 is better,

    • llaracuente 9:10 am on January 19, 2011 Permalink

sand body filler with 40 grit once straight, sand with 80 to make it smooth, hit it up with polyester putty sand with 100g smooth it with 180, also feather edge old paint and primer with 180g

    • WranglerYJ91 10:01 am on January 19, 2011 Permalink

Pretty good except i learned from exp. to work the grinded edge with 80 grit and let your putty run over edge to fill in deep grinding marks. Always come behind 80 grit with 180 grit before you prime. If not the primer will shrink and sand scratches will show in matter of days. especcially laquer primer. best to let primer dry 24 hrs. before sanding to help avoid shrinkage. Not saying im a know it all just cant sleep seeing how others do mudd work lol

the cheapo Harbor Freight respirator is $20 and a thousand times better than dust masks – breathes easy, doesn’t fog the goggles and
has replaceable filters. When I started using this I quit blowing rusty mud buggars after grinding.

Its ok to make rockers stronger. Not frame rails, but rockers are OK. Cars are made with whats called impact zones, but the passenger compartment is not made to absorb energy. Well kind of it is, like windshield posts from a front end wreck, but all in all, that part of the car, the passenger compartment is not made to give way. Its a gray area. If a B pillar is right next to a persons shoulder, is it better to have it give so less energy is passed into the compartment, or better ridged.

the rocker is not just structure for jacking but also structure or the entire vehicle.. the rocker will need to be cut out “at proper cut points” and a new rocker properly weldied back in. in must be strong but not stronger then ment to be from factory

thank you. im 13 and love to fix things and this is a 20 year old car so i just want to use it as a pratice car so its ok if i fuck up.

    • bender2o 12:43 am on July 19, 2010 Permalink

im sure if you got the same thickness metal or a little thicker and welded it in properly, aslong as the welds are stong, it should hold fine, but if i were you i’d send a quick email to a bodyshop and just ask there opinion aswell, it would be fine in my opinion though.

    • TheBlueToyota 1:33 am on July 19, 2010 Permalink

is it possible if i just did it without reinforcing the roker panel because i think im good enough to do this.

    • bender2o 1:42 am on July 19, 2010 Permalink

its a bodyshop job, they’d have to cut the rusted piece out, weld a new piece in, sand it down to fit and spray it to blend it in, its the only real way to get rid of cancerous rust

Auto Paint: Declare A War Against Rust

Are you waiting for the first signs of rust to appear on your car before you start fighting it? Well, it’s better to adopt preventive measures beforehand to safeguard your car against the damages caused by rust. Using protective auto paint beforehand can provide a suitable rust prevention system for your car. Rust Bullet is best suited for this purpose. It is a single component high solid coating, with a unique formulation providing a new way to protect metal.

Rust Bullet is a trusted name in the field of auto paints. The company has two prestigious patents both form the U.S.P.T.O. for the effectiveness of its products against rust prevention and their new way to protect metal. This makes it the preferred auto paint as compared to other products that use the old technology of rust conversion or rust encapsulation, like POR 15.

The unique technology of Rust Bullet allows it to penetrate the metal surface and interact directly with the rust. As Rust Bullet penetrates the rusted areas dehydrating the rust, causing it to become a compact solid again ,allowing the aluminum to react with the resin to form a new armor tuff like surface on top of the old surface. A 2nd coat of Rust Bullet seals everything air tight and a 3rd coat will guarantee extra longevity.

The end result created by a Rust Bullet finish is comparable to that of powder coating, which is one of the most expensive methods of rust prevention; powder coating is applied as a free flowing dry powder and baked inside a non movable oven. Rust Bullet can achieve similar results as powder coating but at substantially lower prices. Rust Bullet can be applied to large or small objects on site. The objects do not have to be dismantled and transported to the site of the backing ovens. Rust Bullet is free form other problems associated with powder coating like orange peel and chipping. Rust Bullet requires minimum surface preparation as compared to powder coating.

Rust Bullet is free from Volatile Organic Compounds (V.O.C.) like Lead, zinc, chromates, heavy metals or acids. This ensures that the product is not hazardous and is environmental friendly. When common sense and proper care are used, it poses little to no health hazards, thus the perfect automotive paint to be applied to a car by a novas’ or by a professional.

Rust Bullet can be applied very conveniently on the surface of the car. Rust Bullet is designed to apply directly onto rusted surfaces, this allows the unique chemical action to take place which dehydrates the rust and kills the corrosion process. This unique formula reacts with the resin and rust to form a metallic like shield that kills off the corrosion agents. The product can be easily sprayed or even applied with a brush or roller. With the minimum requirement for surface preparation Rust Bullet can be easily applied to car surfaces to get permanent prevention form rust.

Rust Bullet offers rust preventive auto paint. The product has produced marvelous results in the field of rust prevention. The website rustbullet.com provides complete information about the company, it’s products and their extensive testing results.

Auto Restoration – Successful Steps to a Great Looking Car

Auto restoration is a big undertaking, but if done right can save you money and give you more customization. Below is a general overview of the points needed to do the work and your particular job may differ in some ways. Most importantly you should focus on doing these procedures safely while using the proper protective gear for yourself as well as others.

There are seven steps to a basic auto restoration.

    Inspection and Evaluation

    1) First wash the vehicle to allow for a clear look of all surfaces.

    2) Make a list of parts needed that can be seen at this time.

    3) Make a list of labor that that can be seen at this time.

    4) Make list of tools and materials needed, such as a compressor, air regulator, air hose and hardware, hand tools, and other metal working tools as needed. Sandpaper and fillers will be necessary as well.

    Disassembly

    1) Expand on part list as you disassemble vehicle.

    2) Organize lose parts.

    3) Take detailed photos/video of complicated areas before disassembly.

    4) Find safe storage for delicate parts

    5) Do not dispose of any parts unnecessarily until the vehicle is finished. This is very important.

Clean, Strip and Protect Metal Parts

    1) Before stripping be sure to have tools and materials in place for coating, such as: A good rust converter for rust that will not be removed, and a good primer to help protect the metal while body work is being done.

    2) Power sand, sand blast, plastic media blast or chemically strip: Rotary sander should be variable speed used below 1000 RPM.

Do the Metal Repairs and Filler Work

    1) Get decent tools like a die grinder, stud welder, MIG welder and hand tools.

    2) If the job is large, concentrate on one or two areas at a time.

    3) This is the time for filler tools and materials. Use decent filler and sandpaper; it isn’t worth purchasing cheap products. A dry guide coat is recommended for leveling the fillers.

Finish the Body Work and Start Priming

    1) Polyester Putty is usually the final filler.

    2) Direct to metal primer then 2K (filler) primer is applied.

    3) Undercoating is usually done prior to doing the finish painting. Good “direct-to-metal” paints can protect the underside from deterioration.

    The Painting Process

This is one of the most important processes of auto restoration and takes a lot of preparation and time. If you are planning on restoring your car, definitely look into this process further, as well as the other processes.

    Compounding

After waiting for the paint to harden somewhat you can sand with ultra fine sandpaper (usually between 600 and 2500 grit) to remove orange peel, dust nibs, runs and other surface imperfections. If paint is fully cured, compounding and polishing takes longer, but is less likely to be damaged.

As mentioned earlier, if you are truly planning to restore your automobile, hopefully this gives you a rough outline of what you need to do, but you should certainly look into it further to give you a full idea of a complete auto restoration.

Auto Parts Inner is a perfect site both for old and new car users or drivers and for common car users and the car aficionados alike.

Sharing with you its expertise in the field of cars, Auto Parts Inner provides useful Auto Parts Information on how to prevent rust, which is said to be one of the worst enemies of cars.

    Cars and Rust

Cars are valuable investments so we want to keep our own auto in excellent shape and condition as much as possible. No matter how old or new it is or whether it’s a known model or not, we give it special treatment as it provides as efficient, safe and comfortable means of transportation as well as enjoyment.

It is inevitable for a vehicle to experience common car problems; this is especially true if the model is already old. Among the most destructive and the most annoying problems is rust. This affects almost all auto parts, especially those exposed to moisture. The body panels, including the doors, the fenders, the hood and the tailgate are of course among the most vulnerable. When damaged by rust, these auto parts become weak and not only that, they become ugly too. Replacement may be your only solution.

Replacement Parts from Auto Parts Inner

Tailgate. Most pickup trucks have tailgates; this is a kind of door attached and protecting the truck bed. As a door to the rear part of the truck, it is often slammed when being closed; thus, it becomes vulnerable to damages. Moreover, trucks are often used off-road, so they are more exposed to damaging factors in the environment including salt, which hastens the formation of rust.

Auto Parts Inner offers the most durable Chevy tailgate, GMC tailgate and Ford tailgate. Designed like the original, these replacement auto parts are sure to give you lasting and the most efficient service. They are also made to endure the toughest driving conditions in which you may use your vehicles.

Hood. The hood is one of the most important body parts as this is used to protect the most vital parts of the car such as the engine. Just like the door and the tailgate, this must be rigid and tough to be able to give the best protection to parts underneath.

Since the hood has a metal covering that is exposed to harsh elements in the environment, the hood is also very susceptible to rust. Because of this, proper care is needed. It must be kept clean all the time and make sure the drain holes around the hood are clear so water can’t pass through and cause rust.

Available at Auto Parts Inner are top of the line replacement Jeep hoods. Jeep replacement hoods are designed and loaded with high-quality composite construction and tough material to match the original Jeep hoods. Every Jeep hood is built to exacting tolerances in precision mold to fit a specific Jeep automobile. These are also equipped with rear braces for hood hinges and hood catches for an easy installation.

You can find out more of the body panels and Auto Parts Inn’s available replacement auto parts at the store’s web site. You can go to its How Cars Work section for more Auto Parts Information on several auto parts, auto makes and models, automotive systems and so much more.

Meanwhile, check out this simple yet useful tips on how to prevent rust in your car:

    1. Keep your car cleans and wells waxed.

    2. Rinse the underside with water when salt is in use or if you live in a salty area.

    3. Keep your wheel wells clean and free from material that holds moisture, such as dirt or leaves.

    4. Make sure that all drain holes in the frame, floor and bottoms of doors are clear.

    5. After you wash your car, open the doors to let the water drain out.

Many car manufacturers void corrosion warranty if you have your car rust proofed. (Rust proofing is a treatment of waxy paste sprayed inside the body panels by an “after market” specialist. The specialist drills holes in hidden areas, sprays in the paste, and plugs the holes. Another type of rust proofing is a clear silicon-based spray that is applied to your paint to protect it from chemicals and pollution.) The best course is to take the rust preventative measures listed above.
